We Are Excited, About An Important Project That We Are Spear Heading!

Since our successful Come Home Year and dedication of the Ella Freeman Heritage House in 2010, the Champney’s West community has been planning to add a wonderful new attraction on the Bonavista Peninsula.

The Champney’s West Aquarium Project.

This exciting venture is expected to educate school children and visitors about sea creatures in our waters, generate additional trade and new aquarium-related businesses for our peninsula, and create local employment opportunities.

Great things are happening on the Bonavista Peninsula, and our group, community and region want to be part of it too.

The Discovery Trail Economic Board is making a cultural tourism plan for projects on the Bonavista Peninsula.

Memorial University has established a project called “Engage” to help connect the University with outport communities.

The Bonavista Peninsula is included in National Geographic’s Eastern Newfoundland Geotourism MapGuide Project, one of only 18 places in the world for this project.

Captain Jan Nigrijn is expanding his floating classroom program in Terra Nova National Park to give students from K to 12 learning experiences on his ship.

Creation of a Sealer’s Museum and Interpretive Centre in Elliston is being promoted through private initiative.

We feel that the timing is right for this attraction and many agree with us. This project has gained the support of Memorial University, both federal and provincial governments, and the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in New Brunswick, To date, we have either raised or obtained tentative commitments for approximately $200,000 toward this project and every member of the association board has contributed time and funds to bring the aquarium to life.

Even with this wonderful level of support we still find that we need additional help to move forward with aquarium construction! In order for us to make this venture a reality, we ask you to consider donating any amount that you can afford or your pledge to help in our efforts to raise an additional $50,000 by June 2013.
